We get asked all of the time, “Can you fix the stains on marble countertops?”, and the answer is, you can do it yourself! Due to the porous material, marble stains easily from things like, oil, rust, dye, wine, and dark coloured objects. Thankfully all you need is a poultice made from three simple ingredients. This DIY marble stain remover sits on the countertop overnight, and in the morning, you should see stain-free marble countertops.
Remove Stains on Marble Countertop
Ingredients
- Baking soda
- Water
- Hydrogen peroxide (for stubborn stains)
Steps
Before You Start
- It’s always smart to test this method on an inconspicuous spot before using the treatment in a more prominent spot on your marble countertop.
Mix the Poultice
- Mix 1 heaping tablespoon baking soda and about 1 teaspoon water (to start, you’ll probably add more) and stir.
- It should have a smooth consistency like frosting. Continue adding little amounts of water and stir until you’ve achieved the desired result.
Apply the Poultice
- Spoon the mixture onto the stain, patting it down with light pressure to ensure even distribution.
- Let the poultice sit overnight.
Remove the Poultice the Next Day
- The poultice will be dry and flakey in the morning. Wipe the poultice off with a damp cloth or paper towel.
- Wash the area with soap and water.
- If there is still staining, you can repeat the process again and let it sit for longer, or follow the directions below to add hydrogen peroxide to your poultice for an extra boost.
For Stubborn Stains
- Make another poultice, this time using hydrogen peroxide instead of water (again, make sure you test in an inconspicous area before using on a more prominant area on your marble countertop.
- Wipe the poultice off and wash again.
- Hopefully you will no longer notice the stain.
