Tiles are used for flooring, wall coverings, backsplash, and in the past – countertops. They are a highly durable and stylish way to finish off a room for longevity. Porcelain, ceramic, glass, granite, marble, travertine, engineered quartz amongst others are used as material sources for tile. Each one has different characteristics that demand altered forms of maintenance to keep them fresh and in great condition. In the case of natural stone, keeping them up to date on sealer is the best way to keep them stain free, vibrant and easier to clean.
Porcelain, ceramic and glass tiles are typically used in backsplash applications. If they are of a quality finish they should be fairly easy to keep clean and in good condition, with minimal effort or maintenance. Generally, porcelain, ceramic and glass tiles are simple colours and glaze finishes creating a sealed surface that is easy to wipe and does not need to be sealed, but the grout used is a different story. We offer grout cleaning and sealing to help keep these areas in top condition!
Natural stone tiles like granite, marble and travertine are an entirely different beast. They bring warmth, depth and beauty to the show, but require a little bit of assistance to keep them that way. It is vital to seal granite, marble and travertine along with other natural stones with high quality sealer at varying rates depending on the specific material and use of the area it is installed in. Flooring would be considered high traffic and use, coupled together with marble, travertine or a light coloured granite material, I’d be inclined to recommend annual sealing to help insure longevity. Backsplash or wall coverings would see less friction and mess build up generally so spacing out the sealing over a few years.
